Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how contemporary political participation of the younger generation and their views on democracy. The type of research used is descriptive quantitative with the technique of distributing questionnaires directly and through online questionnaires to 392 samples from the younger generation population in Makassar City. The results of the research that have been analyzed and interpreted, it can be stated that the description of the political participation of the younger generation in Makassar city is that the higher the hierarchy of political participation, the smaller the quantity of involvement of the younger generation. Meanwhile, the lower the hierarchy of political participation, the greater the quantity of involvement of the younger generation. This can be seen from the most striking response, namely participation in voting, with 73.1% of young people having voted and only 4.3% having held political or administrative positions. The views of the younger generation in Makassar city regarding democracy are that everyone is equally important in decision-making, no one group or group is excluded. In addition, everyone also has the opportunity to play a role in decision-making, regardless of the socio-economic background of the role, he or she has the opportunity to lead. This can be seen from the most prominent response regarding national leaders, where 86.0% of respondents believe that any ethnicity can be a leader.
