Tipe Kepribadian PEN Model Pada Toxic Disinhibition Effect Pengguna Whatsapp

The rapid growth of digital communication has increased the risk of toxic disinhibition effect, a tendency for individuals to exhibit aggressive and uninhibited behaviors during online interactions. This study aimed to examine the influence of the PEN personality dimensions (psychoticism, extraversion, and neuroticism) on the toxic disinhibition effect among WhatsApp users. A quantitative explanatory design was employed involving 319 WhatsApp users in Makassar, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Short-Form Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R) and the Toxic Disinhibition Effect Scale developed by Udris, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and ordinal regression. The results revealed that the PEN personality model had a weak relationship with the toxic disinhibition effect (r = 0.168), explaining 16.8% of the variance. Among the three personality dimensions, only psychoticism showed a positive and significant effect (r = 0.113, p < 0.05), whereas extraversion and neuroticism were not significantly associated with the toxic disinhibition effect (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that aggressive and antisocial personality characteristics play a greater role in predicting toxic online communication among WhatsApp users than sociability or emotional stability.
