Abstract

This study examines the hadith on the timing of ḥijāmah (cupping therapy) and how Jam’iyyah Ruqyah Aswaja (JRA) in Medan City receives it, focusing on the hadith’s authority and how the meaning of sunnah (prophetic tradition) is negotiated in this context. Using a “living hadith” approach and a qualitative-descriptive design, the study gathers data by examining hadith literature and interviewing a JRA practitioner. Field evidence includes interview transcripts detailing the group’s understanding, scheduling, and execution of ḥijāmah. The analysis is conducted both textually and contextually, linking variations in hadith narrations, religious authority, and community practices. The findings indicate that the diverse narrations regarding the dates for ḥijāmah do not provide a uniform textual basis for establishing any specific date as a binding requirement. Within JRA, the authority of the hadith is reinforced through training programs, guidebooks, the scheduling of sunnah days, and the actual performance of the procedure. The reception of these traditions reveals that the recommended sunnah timings are understood as guidelines for attaining greater merit, yet their implementation remains flexible, adapted to individual needs and circumstances. Thus, the sunnah status of ḥijāmah timing is negotiated through the interplay of hadith texts, religious authority, institutional frameworks, and practical considerations. This research illustrates how the “living hadith” perspective elucidates the relationship between textual legitimacy and the adaptation of religious practices within a community.
