Abstract

The rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how languages are taught and learned, yet Arabic language instruction in Indonesian madrasahs remains largely organized around grammar memorization, textual decoding, and teacher-centered delivery. This article reconceptualizes Arabic language learning in madrasahs in the age of AI. Employing a library research design, it synthesizes peer-reviewed studies, policy documents, and authoritative books on AI in education, computer-assisted language learning, Arabic pedagogy, Arabic natural language processing, and Islamic educational thought. The data were analyzed through content analysis and thematic analysis. The findings reveal four interrelated shifts: (1) from an instrumental view of Arabic to a human-centered purpose that joins communicative competence, Islamic textual literacy, and AI literacy; (2) from a standard-only, fragmented content model to a layered, usage-oriented one that recognizes diglossia and classical heritage texts; (3) from transmission-based teaching to dialogic, human–AI collaborative pedagogy grounded in scaffolding, interaction, and formative feedback; and (4) from technical adoption to accountable governance that embeds verification (tabayyun), data protection, academic integrity, and equity. The article proposes the HUDA framework (Human-centered, Usage-oriented, Dialogic, Accountable), in which the teacher acts as learning designer and moral exemplar. It concludes that AI can enrich Arabic learning in madrasahs only when its integration is pedagogically purposeful, linguistically critical, and ethically bounded.
